Embalmer, Clinical Anatomy (0.50 FTE) **School of Medicine, Stanford, California, United States** Research Post Date Apr 24, 2025 Requisition # 106350 **This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.** _Anticipated Shift: Monday-Friday 8am-12pm or 1pm-5pm. The anticipated shift is based on the operational needs and can change at any time, with notice._ **The following position is on-site and is 0.50 FTE (20 hours/week).** The Division of Clinical Anatomy is responsible for anatomy education programs for Stanford's undergraduate, graduate, and medical school students. It also offers programs and resources for the teaching of surgical techniques to residents and for ongoing development of surgeons throughout their careers. We are seeking an Embalmer to perform the following responsibilities: + Preserve, disinfect, and store human remains using up-to-date anatomical methods of embalming and applying standard principles of sterile technique concerning biohazards. + Preparation of cadaver and other specimens for use in anatomy courses. + Drawing blood for serology testing of donated cadavers. + Mix embalming solution chemicals. + Arterial, hypodermic, cavity embalming and other techniques as needed. + Disarticulation and retrieval of bones. + Direct involvement in the education activities of School of Medicine and assist with projections for academic planning. + Maintains upkeep of labs and classroom facilities. + Develop or assist to develop teaching specimens for anatomy courses, such as prosectioned cadavers and structures. + Ensure that stocks of chemical solutions, materials, and supplies are ordered and/or prepared as needed. Including teaching specimens and teaching materials, like human cadavers, prosections, anatomy models, computers, and dissection tools. + Maintain/order, review expenditures of supplies, service, and chemicals, including maintenance of records pertaining to such purchases. Store chemicals safely; be aware of EH&S protocols and standard operating procedures for all chemicals. + EHS air monitoring checks and improvement implementation. + Continues to learn and adopt new embalming techniques to keep up to date on best practices. + Participate in curriculum committees of School of Medicine to assist in curriculum development and anatomy course design. + Participate in the development of processes and procedures related to the handling of donated human remains. **Special skills, knowledge, or training required, including tools or equipment used:** + High School Diploma or equivalent required. + Required Embalmer License + Desired Funeral Director License + Experience with anatomic specimens, embalming process, preparation and handling of embalming solutions. + Safe operation of equipment, including but not limited to a perfusion apparatus, band saw, steam spray cleaning equipment, forklift, and various hand/dissection tools. + Knowledge of blood borne pathogen safety precautions. + Requires ability to operate bone saw, hoist and vacuum pump. + Requires manual dexterity sufficient to perform the above characteristic duties. + Habits of cleanliness and neatness, and the ability to follow carefully detailed oral or written instructions. + Must be willing to work with cadavers. + Prefer Bachelor's degree in anatomy, biology or biochemistry. + At least three years working in a death care-related field (example-mortuary, hospice, coroner, hospital decedent affairs). + Must complete live scan process to be able to work with minors for education. **Unusual working conditions:** + May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including Holidays. + Potential exists for exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potential biohazard materials. + Must be willing to work with donors and cadavers in experimental circumstances. + Schedule will vary based on the needs of the division and the program. **The expected pay range for this position is $42.58 (Step 1) to $51.34 (Step 10) per hour.
